Why We Do This
A ranking is only worth its independence

Most legal directories let a firm pay for the prominence it wants. We built the Global Law Awards to answer a different question: which firms do the people who instruct them, and the peers who practise against them, actually rate. Our editors reach that answer through submissions and confidential references, and they reach it the same way for a paying member and a firm that has never paid us anything.

A firm can display its ranking with confidence because anyone can read exactly how it was decided, and every badge links back to a page on this site that proves it. What cannot be bought is worth more than what can.

The Awards
Five bands, and eight named designations

Within each jurisdiction and practice area, firms are placed in one of five bands, with Band 1 the highest. Beyond the bands there are eight named designations. Each has a defined test, and each may be withheld in an edition when no firm meets it.

Global Elite
A Band 1 firm with verified leading work in three or more jurisdictions within the edition. The rarest designation on the platform.

Regional Leader
A Band 1 or 2 firm with leading work across two or more jurisdictions in a single region, supported by references from more than one of them.

National Leader
A Band 1 or 2 firm with the strongest evidence base in its practice area within one country. At most one per country and practice area.

Market Leader
The top-placed firm in one jurisdiction and practice-area table, where its composite score leads the table it sits in.

Highly Recommended
A Band 1 or 2 firm whose client references average 4.5 of 5 or better, from three or more separate organisations.

At most one specialist firm per practice area, where most of its submitted work sits in that area and it is placed above full-service firms in the same table.

Rising Star
A firm in Band 3 or higher that either entered the rankings within the last two editions or advanced two or more bands since its last placement. A record of movement, not a starter badge.

A firm newly ranked in Band 3 to 5 whose evidence sits within half a band of the next threshold. Recognition of trajectory, reviewed again next edition.

How It Works
How a firm is considered

There is no fee to enter and no fee to be ranked. A firm puts itself forward, our editors do the checking, and the decision rests on what the evidence and the references support.

Every firm is scored against the same six criteria. They are weighted, because what a client experienced and what the market says carry more than what a firm writes about itself.

What the firm's own clients say about the work and the service, gathered from referees in confidence. This carries the most weight.

Peer reputation and standing
How the firm is regarded by the lawyers who practise against it and who send it work.

Track record and notable work
The substance and difficulty of the matters the firm has actually handled in the area under review.

Depth and expertise of the team
Strength in depth behind the named partners, not the reputation of one or two individuals.

How the firm is to work with, on the evidence of the people who have instructed it.

Independent, verifiable signals
What can be confirmed from the public record and the directory, rather than asserted by the firm.
Not an Award
Verification badges are a separate thing

The rankings above are free and cannot be bought. Separately, every listing carries a verification badge that confirms a firm is real, licensed, and in good standing. These come with membership. They are a check on identity and credentials, not a ranking of one firm over another.

Confirms the listing is genuine and the professional holds a current, valid licence. Issued to every verified listing.

Adds enhanced due diligence: credentials authenticated with the bodies that issued them and a clean standing record.

Recommended and Certificate
Deeper verification held by members in sustained good standing. Verification levels, not editorial rankings.
