Our editors rank law firms within a single jurisdiction and practice area, on the strength of their work and the word of the clients and peers who know it.
Most legal guides let a firm pay for the prominence it wants. The Global Law Awards answer a different question: which firms do the people who instruct them, and the peers who practise against them, actually rate. Every firm is assessed the same way, whether it is a member of Global Law Lists or has never paid us anything, and every placement links to a public record anyone can check.
Four steps from entry to ranking
Put your firm's work forward. Our research team gathers the evidence, and editors make the final decision.
Submit your work
Start with your name, firm and work email, and we email you a link that opens your entry. There, tell us where your firm practises, describe representative matters in one practice area and name at least two client or peer referees.
We gather references
Our team contacts referees in confidence and checks what the firm says against public sources. A firm never sees what a referee said.
Your evidence is assessed
Research software drafts an assessment against six weighted criteria. An editor reviews the evidence and confirms every placement.
Results are published
Results are published on 15 December 2026. Every firm that entered is told its outcome directly.
Five ranking bands. Eight named designations.
Firms are assessed within each jurisdiction and practice area. Their band reflects the strength of their evidence and their position relative to other firms doing comparable work. A band may be left empty when no firm meets it.

Eight named designations

Global Elite
Cross-border, Band 1A Band 1 firm with verified leading work in three or more jurisdictions within the edition.

Regional Leader
One regionA Band 1 or 2 firm with leading work across two or more jurisdictions in a single region, supported by references from more than one of them.

National Leader
One countryA Band 1 or 2 firm with the strongest evidence base in its practice area within one country. At most one per country and practice area.

Market Leader
One per tableThe top-placed firm in one jurisdiction and practice-area table, where its composite score leads the table it sits in.

Highly Recommended
Client evidenceA Band 1 or 2 firm whose client references average 4.5 of 5 or better, from three or more separate organisations.

Boutique of the Year
One per practice areaAt most one specialist firm per practice area, where a majority of its submitted work sits in that area and it is placed above full-service firms in the same table.

Record of movementA firm placed in Band 3 or higher that either first entered the rankings within the last two editions or advanced two or more bands since its last placement.

What the editors weigh
Every entry is assessed against six weighted criteria. Client feedback carries the greatest weight, but the final placement depends on the full body of evidence and editorial review.

What can be confirmed from the public record and the network, rather than asserted by the firm.
A ranking cannot be purchased
Membership and rankings are separate. Firms may pay for profile features and verification; payment has no influence on ranking decisions.

Payment-blind assessment
Neither the research software nor the editors can see a firm's membership, orders or payment history. There is no field linking a payment to an outcome.

AI-assisted, editor-confirmed
Research software reads each entry and its anonymised references and drafts a score. An editor reviews the evidence and confirms every placement; the software never decides alone.

Conflict-of-interest controls
An editor with a tie to a firm recuses and another editor takes the review. Every recusal is recorded in a conflict register, with paying members and advertisers recorded there too.

Appeals
A firm may ask for a review. An editor who did not make the decision answers in writing within 28 days, and appealing never counts against a firm.

The Global Law Awards 2026 results are published on 15 December 2026, by country, region and practice area. Each band lists its firms alphabetically, and every placement has its own public verification page.
The awards, answered
01What are the Global Law Awards?
The Global Law Awards are the independent rankings of Global Law Lists. Each annual edition places law firms in one of five bands within a jurisdiction and practice area, and names a small number of firms in eight designations such as National Leader or Rising Star. Placements rest on the firm's entry and confidential references from clients and peers.
02Is there a fee to enter or to be ranked?
No. Entering, being assessed and being ranked are free. A free account is created when a firm enters, so it can follow its references and see its result.
03Can a firm pay to improve its ranking?
No. Rankings cannot be purchased. The assessment reads only the evidence and has no access to a firm's membership, orders or payments. A member and a non-member with the same evidence receive the same result.
04Who decides the rankings?
Our editors. Research software helps by reading each entry and its anonymised references and drafting a score against the six criteria. An editor reviews the evidence and confirms every placement before it is published.
05When are the results published?
Results for the Global Law Awards 2026 are published on 15 December 2026. Entries close on 31 October 2026; later entries are held for the next edition.
06What do I need to enter?
The jurisdiction and practice area, a short account of representative matters described at a level a peer would recognise, and at least two client or peer referees. No confidential client details are required.
07Can a decision be appealed?
Yes. A firm may ask for a review of a placement, a non-placement or a withdrawal. An editor who did not make the original decision answers in writing within 28 days, and appealing never counts against a firm in a later edition.
08How are the awards different from verification badges?
Verification confirms that a lawyer or firm is real, licensed and in good standing. The Global Law Awards are a separate editorial judgement of how a firm stands among its peers, decided on evidence and free of charge.
