What does a private client lawyer do?

Private client work covers the personal legal affairs of individuals and families, often with significant or international assets: wills and succession planning, trusts, personal tax, residence and citizenship planning, family business governance and charitable giving. Private client lawyers often work alongside accountants and wealth managers.

How do I choose a private client lawyer in Bern?

1. If your assets or family members are in more than one country, ask how the lawyer coordinates advice across them.
2. Ask whether work is billed by the hour, at fixed fees or under an annual retainer.
3. Bring a summary of assets, existing wills or trusts and the family details relevant to your plans.
4. Confirm the lawyer is admitted and in good standing with the bar or law society in Switzerland, and ask who will handle your matter.
